North East wins IT awards

Date 27 Oct 2006

The North East is leading the way in IT after Northumbria University and Northumberland County Council both won accolades at a national awards ceremony.

Northumbria won ‘Most IT Enabled Organisation’ in the contest, run by the journal Computing. Northumberland County Council won ‘IT Department of the Year’. Northumbria also came first in the Most IT Enabled Organisation category, and was commended for its innovative and flexible IT infrastructure, which includes a massive storage facility of 16 terabytes for staff and students.

Jed Woodhouse, Director of Northumbria's IT services, said: "This award recognises that we have positioned ourselves apart from the crowd and used IT to underpin and enhance every aspect of University life. "This accolade is well-deserved, not just by the IT staff for implementing this provision, but by the University as a whole which has enthusiastically embraced the use of IT.''

Peter Gallon, Head of IT at Northumberland County Council, said: "Being chosen as IT Department of the Year recognises the hard work and dedication of all the staff in the Computer Services Department who have shown a real commitment to improving services."
