> STEP up your Business: Shell Technology Enterprise Programme

STEP (Shell Technology Enterprise Programme) is a UK-wide programme offering undergraduates project-based work within small to medium sized businesses and community organisations. STEP is designed to help small companies develop their potential by utilising the high level skills of undergraduates. The businesses benefit by fresh ideas and improved processes - both in the short and long term.

Over the past sixteen years, STEP has delivered over 14,000 STEP projects throughout the UK. Most projects take place over the summer but are available throughout the year...

BENEFITS OF STEP:

You'll save time...
Having a dedicated and largely self-sufficient team member concentrating on a specific project will allow you still to manage your usual tasks, and will also provide an extra pair of hands for other major tasks thrown up during the course of the STEP project.

You'll acquire new skills...
Your business will benefit from new skills, without needing to commit to costly training courses or additional employees. The project you assign to your STEP student may well prove the need for a full-time employee, or it may prove that a particular development idea is not worth pursuing.

You'll have no big financial costs...
Compared with other training programmes or recruitment consultants, STEP is incredible value for money -especially considering the help and support provided by your own STEP Agent. Also, as you are not actually employing the STEP student there are no employer NI or tax contributions to pay (except VAT).

THE BASICS:

Most businesses host a student for eight weeks over the summer vacation, although part-time flexible STEP projects and full year projects can also be arranged. During this time, the student focuses on a specific development project that can assist your business in growth, development or sustainability. In this way, we can provide an effective and affordable way for you to:

Research new products, niche markets, competitor and consumer behaviour, business development ideas...

Improve information management systems, internal communication systems, operational procedures, IT systems...

Create marketing strategies, promotional materials, Internet and Intranet initiatives, e-commerce facilities...

Innovate with dynamic, fresh new ideas and perspectives to help move your business forward.

All STEP students have completed at least two years of an undergraduate degree and have undergone an intensive interview and induction process before they enter your business, so are ready on many occasions to hit the ground running.

"The systems that David implemented will save us significant time and money in the future. The STEP programme gave us the chance to get a high-calibre mind working on a project that we did not have the time or expertise to undertake in-house."

- Paul Trotter, Managing Director Bob Trotter Cycles, York
