Gold for Sage Gateshead

Date 17 Sep 2006

The Sage Gateshead has won yet another award – this time not for its innovative design, but for its commitment to providing a smoke free environment. The gold National Clean Air award was presented at the UK National Smoking Cessation Conference, held at the venue this week. Presenting the award was Chris Owens, head of tobacco control for The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, which introduced the Clean Air Award scheme.Anthony Sargent, General Director at the Sage Gateshead said: "While several of our artists and staff do enjoy popping outside to smoke, everyone visiting, working, performing, learning and participating here values the fact that the air within the building is entirely smoke-free, leaving space for the prevailing smells to be the natural aroma of varnished wood and fresh coffee!"The North East’s list of smoke free places is rapidly expanding. If you are part of an organisation in the North East that wishes to apply for the no-smoking award, visit, email info or call 0191 387 2139 for details of support from trained local coordinators.
