The latest sports craze has hit the North East, thanks to a local entrepreneur who has set up a new table tennis coaching service.

David Godbold launched Godbold Table Tennis after working with business adviser Chris Craig at the North East Business and Innovation Centre (BIC) in March 2011. The BIC also helped Mr Godbold secure funding to purchase five mobile tables and other equipment.

He decided to set up the business after noticing resurgence in the popularity of table tennis, which he attributes to the Ping! Initiative which aims to get more people involved in sport in the run up to the Olympics.

David said: “If you’ll excuse the pun, I’ve never taken my eye off the ball with table tennis.

“As there is a definite resurgence of interest in the sport, and a real need to get children and young people engaging in regular physical exercise, now seems the perfect time to put all of my expertise and experience to use and become full time professional table tennis coach”

Since he set up his company in March. David has already won contracts to act as performance coaches at several educational establishments, including Northumbria University.

Chris Craig, business adviser at the North East BIC said: “There’s an outdated image of table tennis consisting of dusty tables with cobwebs underneath and dented balls, but this couldn’t be further from its current status. This is an Olympic sport with over 40 million competitive players worldwide, making it the globe’s largest participation sport, and that’s not even counting the millions who just play for fun.

“David has true passion for table tennis, and knows the sport inside out, so I have no doubt that his coaching business will go from strength to strength as it develops in the run up to the Olympics.”
