His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, urged the legal profession to sign up to a set of principles to combat global warming in a speech given earlier this week at the official launch of the Legal Sector Alliance (LSA) in London.

The LSA is a group of law firms and organisations, including Newcastle-based Dickinson Dees and Ward Hadaway, which is committed to working together to take action on climate change by reducing their carbon footprint and adopting environmentally sustainable practices.

Merger made official with parties

To celebrate the official merger of two North East law firms - Mincoffs in Newcastle and Jacksons from Tees Valley - now named Mincoff Jacksons, the firm held two special welcome parties at the MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art) and the Baltic Art Gallery in Newcastle.

Guests from the past and present of both firms attended the events, including 104-year-old friend of the firm, Mrs Jenny Bowron, who joined the party held at Tees Valley's contemporary art gallery Mima along with over 100 guests.

Small firms 'should be able to pay flexibly'

The number of unpaid tax bills increased by 20% last year, according to official figures released by the National Audit Office. The number of tax debts in the UK rose last year to 15.8m, sparking fears that many small firms will struggle to pay the tax they owe.

The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) has called for small businesses to be allowed to pay tax owed on a more flexible timescale.

According to Gordon Brown, senior partner at legal firm Gordon Brown Associates, Northern Rock could be used to help first-time buyers onto the property ladder and generate movement in the market.
