Two of television's top chefs have become the first official patrons of a new Northumberland café.

Hairy Bikers Si King and Dave Myers have pledged to support Cramlington's Café Azure after being impressed by its charitable philosophy and eco-friendly design.

Last minute help from chocolate shop

Simply Chocolate, South Shields' specialist sweet shop, will be keeping its doors open late on Thursday 18 December in a bid to help men find a Christmas present for their loved ones.

Following on from last year's hit shopping evening the store will be open until 8pm for one night only to help husbands, dads, brothers, uncles and sons with their Christmas shopping.

Food group generates £3.3 million for North East producers

The North East England Food & Drink Group (NEEFDG) has revealed the economic impact of its work to grow and promote the region's food and drink sector. Figures taken from quarterly reports show that during its first year of operation, the group's activities have generated Â£3.3 million of additional income for food and drink producers in the North East.

Thanks to the food and drink group, businesses have been able to attend 16 consumer events, 11 trade exhibitions and three major 'meet the buyer' conferences, from which the additional revenue was created. In total, 459 organisations have benefited with NEEFDG providing access to an average of one event every fortnight.

North East employers offered input on qualifications

Food and drink manufacturers in the North East are being invited to build a new approach to recognising the achievements of their workers.

Improve, the food and drink sector skills council, is working to introduce new occupational qualifications which it says will make it easier for companies to access appropriate training and reward staff development. Employers are being urged to join sector groups to get advice and guidance on the new qualifications.

Public orders region's top restaurants

The search is on for the region's finest restaurants with the launch of this year's North East Restaurant Awards.

More than 500,000 voting cards will be distributed to hundreds of restaurants across the region, giving diners the chance to nominate their favourite restaurants in 14 categories voted for by the public.

Firm supplies feed from horse to hamster

The seed of a business idea was sown when Lindsay Lattimer had problems getting hold of certain feeds for her own horses and animals.

Now Lindsay, with backing from mum Margaret Wigham, has given up her full time NHS job and set up Cherrytree Supplies Ltd, based at Greenside Farm near Castleside in County Durham.
