To mark its 150th anniversary, Scotswood-based Pattinson Scientific Services Ltd took its staff on a riverboat trip down the Tyne, as a thank you for all their hard work.

Established in 1858 by J and H S Pattinson in The Side, Newcastle upon Tyne, the firm concentrated on coal purity testing and food analysis.

An invention to remove potentially harmful chemical waste from manufacturing processes has been developed by a North East company.

The new process, developed by Integrated Effluent Solutions (IES) of Spennymoor, County Durham, uses hypersonic vibrations to separate sulphate from waste water. The potentially toxic sulphate is rendered harmless to the environment and in some cases it can be recycled and used as a base material for in the manufacture of concrete and cement.

Chemical company boss Paul Booth has gone "back to the floor" as part of a campaign to promote the business benefits of apprenticeships. His path to becoming the UK President of SABIC, one of the world's industrial giants, started off through an apprenticeship on Teesside.

Paul went back to his roots to experience the sort of training on offer for apprentices today and to tell the young learners, and employers, what can be achieved through the programme.

Bedlington Terrier Bramble and Alsatian cross Izzie have sniffed out a fragrant business deal for their owners.

The dogs' determination to check out each other's scent meant David Virgo and Steve Pringle met in a field overlooking the Derwent Valley.
