New rules impacting the North East chemical industry were on the agenda at an event in County Durham earlier this week.
The North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC) hosted a workshop at Hardwick Hall Hotel on Monday to discuss REACH: the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals regulations. These new rules which govern the manufacturing, importation and use of chemical substances are now in place across the UK and Europe and are beginning to impact on companies across the North East of England.

A Derwentside company is launching trials of a new product that is expected to attract attention from the world's major pharmaceutical companies.
BioToolomics Ltd was set up in 2006 by Dr Chad Zhang, the developer of chromatography technology that gave the company a world-leading position in the field of bioseparation, vital in the development of new drugs and treatments based on antibodies, vaccines and enzymes.

The North East's process industries are being given access to new funding after their network was given over Â£1.5m by the region's development body. One NorthEast awarded Â£1.65m to the North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC), aiming to ensure its growth over the next three years.
NEPIC provides over 500 of the region's pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical and support companies with a network to share methods of best practice and allows its members to work together.

North East England and the process industries received a boost last week with the signing of a collaboration agreement between the North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC) and Axelera, a chemicals-environment cluster based in France.
Dr Stan Higgins, CEO of NEPIC, signed the agreement with Bruno Allenet, President of Axelera, in the presence of the UK Ambassador to France, Sir Peter Westmacott, Professor Julian Morris of Newcastle University and Peter Loftus of Renew Tees Valley.

The meeting at the Houses of Parliament in Westminster discussed how they might work together to sustain and grow the region's largest industrial sector - the process industries.
