Judith Doyle, Gateshead College's Assistant Principal was in Birmingham to hear the announcement of the award. She said: "Being acknowledged with a Beacon Award is an exciting opportunity to showcase our progress in developing our teaching workforce on a national stage. It's great to receive recognition for our investment in our teachers, helping them to deliver first class teaching. This award is a credit to the teaching and learning quality development team for their high standards, innovative practice and tireless efforts; their delight is shared by the entire college community."

Gateshead College was, in receiving this award, recognised for its ‘Coaching in Action' strategy, an initiative that involves lecturers supporting each other in a peer review way, to improve their teaching practice.

This year, 23 award winners were chosen from nearly 300 entrants from across the UK. Categories included awards for equality and diversity, innovation in curriculum leadership development and international student support, all of which are designed to champion the diverse achievements of the further education sector.

The award comes just months before the college officially opens its new £39 million pound Baltic campus early next year. The state-of-the-art campus will feature fully equipped modern classrooms as well as a beauty salon, spa, gym, 200 seat theatre and first class conferencing facilities.
