Up to 500 jobs are being promised by a Wearside company which specialises in making electric vehicles. Washington-based Tanfield Group is looking for a suitable site for their new factory, planned to open in 2009. The firm is in talks with regional development agency One NorthEast to keep the new plant in the region. The company already employs 1,200 people worldwide and last year took over the former LG Philips electronics factory in Washington.

Chairman Roy Stanley said the early discussions with local authorities over the possibility of developing the facility in the region were positive. He said: "Ideally we would like it to be in the North East but it depends on the availability of space and the support from local government."

He plans to meet representatives from One NorthEast next week in the hope of gaining financial support.
