Science City and the CTO

City Technology Office

Date 16 Aug 2006
City Technology Office

The Government has designated Newcastle as a Science City. This qualifies it as one of only six cities in the UK to be asked by Government to build on existing strengths in science and technology research and development for commercial purposes.

As one of the founding partners in the Newcastle Science City programme, Newcastle City Council is playing a huge part in ensuring that the North East economy is ready to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to put the region at the forefront of this burgeoning sector, as well as the associated commercial and inward investment opportunities that this will bring for knowledge-based businesses.

As part of Newcastle City Council, the City Technology Office is playing a key role in developing and implementing the Business and Commercialisation strand of the Science City Programme. To do this, it works with local, national and international partners to meet the needs of the region’s knowledge-based businesses. Within this, its aims include ensuring that the business support network is easily accessible to knowledge-based entrepreneurs, facilitating access to networks and markets and testing the market for new Science City services through pilot projects.

The CTO has set-up a number of services aimed at the knowledge-based sector of the economy. These range from hands-on support to help start-up businesses get access to finance, markets and strategic partners, through to practical services such as legal advice accessed through their local partners.
