The NewcastleGateshead Initiative is encouraging people to deck themselves with festive lights during its annual Winter Festival. The festival begins today with Glow 07, a collection of contemporary artworks and illuminations located at various sites throughout the area.

Work by artist Tod Hanson will be projected on to Trinity Chambers at Newcastle Quayside. City-goers will also be able to wear their own miniature illuminated version of the artwork as badges.

A fleet of illuminated Glowmobiles will take to the streets on New Year's Eve for an early evening parade finale. Spectators at the event are being asked to deck themselves out with lights to become ‘glow pedestrians'.

The organisers aim to make the whole of the Newcastle and Gateshead conurbation ‘glow'. They want people attending on New Year's Eve to use flashing lights, glow sticks, illuminated badges, torches, glowing jewellery, or anything they can think of to achieve this.

The Winter Festival forms part of Newcastle and Gateshead's festivals and events programme for 2007, managed by culture10. For more details pick up a Winter Festival guide from local Tourist Information Centres or log onto
