Durham named North of England's leading university

Durham came ahead of Manchester, Leeds, and Newcastle

Durham University has been confirmed as the North of England’s leading university in a national league table for the second time this month. The Times Good University Guide 2008 ranks Durham as the UK’s ninth best university out of 113 institutions, which is an improvement of one place on the previous table.

This is the second time this month that Durham has clinched a top ten spot in a league table. It was ranked the tenth best UK university in The Good University Guide league table sponsored by PriceWaterhouseCoopers Durham was also named in both The Times and the PWC league tables as the top place in the country to study English.

The Times Good University Guide 2008 league table is based on performance in a number of areas which include student satisfaction, research quality, entry standards, student-staff ratio, completion rates, investment in facilities, and graduate prospects.

Professor Chris Higgins, Vice Chancellor of Durham University, said: "Durham is committed to establishing itself as a top ten university and this guide not only recognises our world-leading research across many disciplines and high-quality teaching but also the value of our distinctive student experience. "This is also good news for the North of England and the North East, particularly as one of Durham’s goals is to contribute to the social, cultural and intellectual life of the region. "We fully intend to build on our successes in future years."

Margaret Fay, chairman of regional development agency One NorthEast, said: "The region’s universities are vital partners in the ongoing economic development of North East England. These latest accolades for Durham University confirm this and reflect the growing reputation of the region as a centre for world-class study and innovative research. The tables also recognise the commitment of Durham staff to deliver an unrivalled learning experience in the heart of the local community. Congratulations to all."
